Deckhand General Description

Stevens Towing Co. of North Carolina (STNC), based out of Edenton NC, is looking for an individual with a maritime background to work aboard one of our tugboats as a deckhand. STNC owns and operates four tugboats along with a fleet of jumbo hopper barges that are used to move, Steel, DRI, Wood Chips, Mill Scale, Scrap Steel, Pig Iron, and more. Our tugs push these barges up and down the East Coast via the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Our business takes us as north as Philadelphia, Camden, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Georgetown, plus as south as our home base in Edenton, Charleston, Savannah, and occasionally Port Canaveral.

Unless otherwise defined by applicable law, any employment relationship with STNC is of an “at-will” nature, meaning the employee may resign at any time and STNC may terminate employment at any time with or without cause.

Requirements

  1. Valid Driver’s License (required)
  2. Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card) Issued by Homeland Security (required)
  3. Able to satisfy all the United States Coast Guard physical requirements (CG- 719K), as found in 46 CFR part 10 (required)
  4. Able to satisfy all United States Coast Guard drug testing requirements for vessel personnel, as found in 46 CFR part 10 (required)
  5. At least 18 years of age (required)
  6. Ability to understand written and verbal orders (required)
  7. Experience working in the maritime industry (preferred)

Requirements

The expectations for a deckhand include but are not limited to:

  • Support their captain in the safe and efficient operations of STNC boats and barges.
  • Attach and remove lines and cables to/from the vessel, barges, docks, and locks.
  • Ability to become familiar and acquire an understanding of barges in a tow.
  • Ability to handle the tugboat’s working lines, mooring lines, and towing gear (hawsers, cables, bridles, shock lines, and retrieving lines.)
  • Ability to throw heavy lines and secure large working lines quickly and efficiently.
  • Responsible for regular engine room checks.
  • Responsible for regularly checking barges.
  • Responsible for setting out navigation lights and checking them regularly.
  • Responsible for cooking meals and keeping the galley clean. Required to wash dishes after meals. Required to clean the stove and oven weekly

Working Environment

Constant outside working conditions and frequent engine room conditions with loud noise, fumes, odors, chemicals, dust, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risks of electrical shock, sun glare and/or exposure to arc lights. Occasional inside conditions. Must have the ability to live and work in close quarters with 3-4 other crew members.

Must have the ability to spend a length of time away from home (either 14 or 28 days). Work schedule while onboard is determined by the boat captain but is generally 6 hours on 6 hours off for a 24-hour period. Travel 100%.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Daily rates are determined based on experience but start at $200 per day.
  • After successful completion of 60 days of employment, employees are eligible for company benefits such as: health, dental, vision, life insurance, short/long-term disability insurance, 401k with company match of 4%.
  • Employees are eligible to utilize the company EAP (Employee Assistance Program) from day 1. This benefit is completely free to the employee.
